Having difficulty dealing with change? Let me tell you a story…

‘Who moved my cheese’, is a story about ‘change’.  It takes place in a maze where four characters look for cheese. Cheese is there and they feel happy. They are so comfortable and relaxed that they don’t notice that cheese is becoming less and less as time goes by…until one day there is no cheese! And now what? What is their next step?

Cheese is a metaphor for what we want to have in life, be it love, health, relationship, job, a new self, a different aspect, a new behavior and so on.

People tend to pursue their cheese because we think it is part of our happiness. So, we become attached to it. And what happens when it is taken away? Quite often, we blame others, we feel surprised, we are unprepared, we feel angry and frustrated. It is difficult to envision ourselves being in another situation – or in another maze –  because we have to go out of our comfort zone. And sometimes we are afraid to move on to something new. So, we try to deny that our cheese is no longer there, or that we have the alternative to look for new cheese.

Fear is one of the basic feelings a human being experiences. Fear is useful and must be evaluated in every single situation. But, fear is dangerous when it keeps us from trying new things. Sometimes, the things that we are afraid of, are not so bad as we think they are. However, one can only realize this only after changing the beliefs and the perspective he has about certain things. If we believe that a change will harm us, then we will resist to it. Consequently, just ask yourself: what would I do if I wasn’t afraid?
